June 24, 2007

Hey everyone,

This weekend Glenn and Matt headed to the Island to meet up with Sam and compete in a stage race in Comox. The stages were as follows, Stage one; a 16km TT, Stage 2; a Kermesse (50mins + 1 lap), Stage 3; 80km road race.

This was Matt’s first ever stage race and Glenn’s first ever attempt at a TT on a fixed gear as both Matt and Glenn rode their beloved track bikes. Sam was riding his SPANKY new Naked road bike.

The TT was quite a bit harder then expected on the track bikes for the boys and a bit of a frustrating experience for Sam. The start of the TT was a false flat to 2 VERY draining climbs at about 4-6%. Glenn and Matt both were second-guessing the choice of gears. Glenn was also cursing Matt for putting the stupid idea of riding a bike with no gears UP HILL in his head. Sam had a 3rd technical problem with his drive train since his return to racing. Even with getting off his bike and trying to fix it he still managed a top 20 placing! Glenn rode to a strong finish with a 15th place and a time of 23:40. Once Matt finally got over the hills he proceeded to storm the course and clocking a time of 22:50 to finish up in 5th place.

The 2nd stage was a 50min + a lap circuit race with a LOOOOOOOONG finishing straight. Tailor made for Matt. The team worked exceeding well as the torrential rain fell throughout the whole race. The three Twitch riders were very active in attacking and reeling in several breaks. It was apparent that nothing was going to get away as the field was very strong and very well matched. Glenn took a huge flyer with 2kms to go which forced the other teams to do the chasing leaving Sam and Matt sitting in to sprint in case Glenn was caught…well Glenn was caught and with 500m to go another rider attacked and Matt immediately jumped on the wheel. This guy pulled until 200m when the final sprint started. A rival rider jumped hard past us and opened a slight gap. That was a short lived gap as Matt got the big meat rolling and proceeded to sprint away from the pack to take the victory with Sam powering his way to 3rd place. Autographs were signed pictures and interviews were taken…. NOT! We did celebrate though.

The 3rd and finally stage was the road race. Matt was 2nd in the GC (General Classification) now and the team was pretty motivated to work for our GC leader. The course was the TT course but we screamed around the course for 5 laps. Once again the 3 of us worked well making sure there was a rider in every break and blocking while they were away. In lap 4 both Glenn and Matt started cramping on the climbs and beginning to wonder if we were going to finish the race. Well as we entered the 5th and final lap, Sam rode away from the pack with another rider in tow. Knowing that Sam was a much better finisher then the guy he broke away with, Matt sat at the front of the pack for a good 5km while Sam and his breakaway partner opened what turned out to be an un-surmountable gap that resulted in Sam winning the sprint and securing the GC! Both Glenn and Matt fought it out to try to protect Matt’s GC placing. Glenn once again took his patented 2k flyer but alas was caught with about 500m to go. It was a hard fought bunch sprint where Matt seriously cramped about 100m from the finish. While having to sprint seated, Matt managed a 6th place finish and a 3rd place finish in the GC.

2 Stage victories and 2 podium GC places for the Fast Twitch Cycling team in their 1st ever Stage race as a team! Great job guys!!!

Matt ”Lego” Chater

P.S. Welcome Back Sam!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://legos-world.blogspot.com/2007/06/fast-twitch-1st-and-3rd-in-gc-june-24.html' title='Fast Twitch 1st and 3rd in the GC!!! If it ever disappears it means I lost my soul or lost myself.

Please remember one thing, the people you love may not always be here. Today, my teammate Matt Barlee and I were up to doing another standing 500m. Both of us were so close to the standards on day 2 that we were allowed another chance. Well guess what? Both Matt and I made the standards. I took another 4/10th of a second off my time and the put me clear of the standard with a 33.26. The standard was 33.30. Matty did a 33.25, beat me by 1/100th of a sec. Regardless; this was a new PB for me.

The results of this week were very positive for me. Even though I was not selected for the Pan am Championships I still made the standards that the CCA set forth. It did not appear that anyone expected the riders to make the standards let alone 5 riders. This bodes well for the Canadian sprinters. The CCA now has a pool of sprinters that it can choose from for different projects if they so desire. It would not be a bad idea especially coming into and Olympic year.

I plan to take a little bit of time off of serious sprint training to allow myself a break and to refresh my program. But seeing what I was able to accomplish in the last 6 months, I will continue to stay focused on the Olympic dream.

I also wanted to say Congratulations to Cam, Yanik and Lawrence and GOOD LUCK at the Pan Ams!!!

Later,

LEGO

BVC Summer Challenge and Nat's team selections

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_cdFc2ETNkDk/RkKFDs5EM8I/AAAAAAAAABA/BgPIeFFCpMo/s400/DSC_0090_scl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062755229754471362" />

The 2nd and 3rd day at the BVC worked out fairly well for me. I managed to do a personal best in the flying 200m. This is the 1st time I have gone under 11.4secs on this track...actually anywhere. I pulled off an 11.37. I began the sprint derby and managed to lose my first round because I did not execute my tactics effectively. I got REALLY pissed off at myself and proceeded to ride with some focused anger. It seemed to work because I managed to win the remainder of the sprint races. I ended up 2nd in the derby. After the Derby was the Keirin. I sat on the front of the 1st round and just held my speed enough that people couldn't come around. I advanced to the finals of the keirin where I followed up the 1st round with a win in the finals. I was quite happy with this.

The Sunday "Day 3 "

Sunday was a fairly easy day for the sprinters. 500m TT and the Team Sprint was all that was on the schedule.

I think I have only ever done one 500m TT and I don't even remember the time. I did manage to win the 500m TT. The team sprint was a bit of a new endeavor. My normal team is Keith and Barlee but unfortunately Barlee had to miss the team sprint so we commendered my other team mate and the guy I am coaching. His name is Mike "Puke Skywalker" Lawrence. That turned out to be a good idea. We stormed the Team sprint and took home top honours. Mike was flying this weekend and I very happy how he is going. Great job PUKE!!!!

Overall I won the sprint omnium so I felt pretty good coming into the selection week.

TRIALS Day 1

Flying 200m

Not feeling like I had a long enough warm up I was a bit nervous going into my 1st attempt to make the standards. It was substancially colder in there today then it was on Saturday so I wasn't too confident that I would have another PB. But low and behold, 11.2!!!!! Another PB!!!

I did not make the time standard with that effort but I was close so I was offered another chance to try. The standard was 10.9 secs. I felt pretty good with the gear I chose but I thought I could push a bigger gear so I changed it. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! 11.05 for my second attempt. Another PB!!!! I didn't make the standards but I am VERY happy with how things went today. I have been working so hard at my 200m and sprints in general and it seems that all that work has paid off. I feel proud of myself today!

Tomorrow is the Standing 500m TT and I am hoping I hit the standards tomorrow as that would put me in a VERY good spot for the selections process. Wish me luck everyone. I want to go to Pan Ams!!!

Look for something tomorrow.

Good night all,

Lego

Day 2

This will be a very short blog as it is time for bed!!!

I won 5 out of 6 sprint rounds and won both my Keirin qualifier and the final. I felt really good in my warm up and hit some great speeds in my warm-up jumps. The only race for me tonight was the Chariot race. That is a 2 lap race from a standing start against 5 other riders. You draw for positions on the start line and then when the start happens it is FULL BORE for two laps. I ended up winning both the qualifier and the final. My Team mate Matt "Princess" Barlee was 2nd and my other team mate Mike "Puke Skywalker" Lawence ended up forth in his first final! By the way Mike is an athlete that I coach.

All in all I am quite happy with the way things worked out tonight and I feel like I am on good form for the National team selections next week, so cash donations would be greatly accepted :P

I will have some pictures after the weekend.

Tomorrow, Flying 200m, sprints and Keirin! I hope this works! Nothing to exciting yet but I think I jinxed myself for my night of training. I will explain after the video.

So when I started training, I was very slow tonight...VERY SLOW. So after my warm-up and 2 short efforts I called it a night. No point doing a workout if your bosy for some reason is not able to perform. The next night though I was flying!!!

Here is the short video of Me followed by Mike and then Keith.

Anyways, I should have a bit more for you this week. Maybe I will have a nice little Flying 500m episode.

From the Black Ops of Agent Lego

HALUUUUUUUU

Hey everyone,

Well it is just a few short weeks until Pan Championship selections and I have resigned myself to not going to Pan ams. Three weeks away from work and no income during that time would perhaps mean I would find my stuff on the street. I am ok with this though. I am more concerned with showing fitness and improvement with a focus still on the 2007/2008 world-cup season.

Other goings on...Sam Whittingham has decided that he would like to race with the Fast Twitch Cycling Team (my team) Sam one of my best friends and one of my greatest mentors. It has been something that I have wanted for many years to race as a team mate of Sam's. He is coming out of retirement as a competitive road and track cyclist. although, try Googling his name or have a look at the link for Naked Bicycle Designs on my Blog site. You will see what an accomplished rider he is.

Look here...Discovery documentary on Sam

(I get a few cameos in here :P)

My new track bike should be in the making soon :D WOOOO HOOO!!! This has been a long time coming! Of course it will be a Naked track bike! I am surprised I have not ripped my current bike into pieces.

My Mom just came back from a vacation in South Carolina and picked me up a little present. It is coming from Ontario and is in the mail but I am excited to see what it is! THANKS MOM!!!

On a bit of a down note, my friend Travis Smith had a serious crash in Spain during the World Championship and fractured his hip in two places. Travis underwent Emergency surgery on this past Thursday to put in a couple screws and steel plates! I wish him the best of luck with his recovery and with getting back on the bike soon. I would imagine Trav will come back Faster and Stronger as he will be part Bionic!

Anyways that is about all for now.

I will post again soon.

Good Hunting!

Lego

Burnaby Training camp

Hey Peoples,

After some thought I have decided to not partake in the training camp being held at the Burnaby Velodrome this week. I will continue with my current program. I am quite happy with how my training is going right now and I don't think it is wise to change or add something different this close to Pan American Championship selections. I still have almost 2 months until the selections are but I have to start saving some money. The CCA (Canadian Cycling Association) has decided to hold the trials in Los Angles. I figure they are trying to make it more difficult for people to attend, as they don't seem to want to support the sprint program.

Basically the plan is to get my butt down there and kick some ass and make them look my way. Show that they really don't have any other choice. The Pan Ams are the first event of the 2007 season where the points go towards Olympic qualifications for Canada. This will be the first big race and a major stepping-stone to get my shot at the Olympics.

The first major countdown is underway!

Do it!

Lego

Vancouver Bike Show

Greetings Programs,

I just spent 26 hours working the Vancouver bike show and talk to a LOT of people. I was there to promote track cycling and the Burnaby Velodrome. While I was there I had a couple opportunities to ride the rollers and along with Jenn, Dumpy and Glenn. People were FASCINATED with the rollers. We even managed to get a couple of people that had never ridden the rollers to try them. That was fun although a bit nerve racking as I had my race wheels on my bike. You know, have to show the BLING at the bike show.

On Saturday www.Roadie.ca did a bit of a news article at he show and at about 3mins and 15 seconds they have a short clip and interview with yours truly.

Interview

That is the link for the article.

Well I am about to head to the gym so I must talk to you all later!

End of Line...........

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to post the Keirin final during the 6 day. I seem to have found a way of monopolizing most of my time. Between full-time work and my new training schedule, I don't seem to have room for a whole heck of a lot. Regardless, here I am.

I feel that training is going exceptionally well considering there is very little known direction from the Canadian Cycling Association. There are rumours that there will be a selection camp about two weeks before the Pan Am Championships but no official word yet. Pan Ams are in May.

I have been getting some help from my friend who lives in Australia with my program and it seems to be paying off. Aside from gaining a lot of mass in the last month, I am getting much stronger. My Jeans don't fit loosely any more and my shoulders are getting bigger again...starting to look like a running back again.

I have been going pretty hard with 3 gym workouts a week and 3-4 times a week on the bike. I finally get a rest week this week. Although most people look at my week and would not agree that I am resting. It is a fine line.

The 6-day went well, Glenn and I had some good results in the Madison and even made some money. I managed to do every race except one and ended up paying for it the next week during the training camp...I was so FLAT!!! I don't remember when I was as slow as I was in the camp. But I am back and getting faster then ever. Watch out!

Peace out!

P.S. The kit that I am wearing in my picture is a PVL Forte kit from Sam Whittingham of Naked Bicycles. Hi link is on my site. Glenn and I need to wear these for the Madison.

The old stomping grounds!!

Well I am back in Ontario for a secret visit. Christmas with my mom, brother, sister-in-law and my NIECE!!! It appeared to be quite a surprise for everyone. Let’s just say this...it was an emotional surprise. I was happy enjoying a pint with Dan before I went to sleep last night. A couple of friends from the city may be coming up tonight for a visit. That will be great!

I have to say, Collingwood is much the same as it was when I left 5 years ago. There are a few changes...Home Depot, a BIG mall, a Massive Liquor store and Blue Mountain is now a town in itself. The Township of The Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains LOL!!! 700 vertical feet. MASSIVE!!! They even have about an inch of snow on about 2 run. Although the actual resort looks like Whistler village and Mt. Tremblant, and Panorama and Copper Mountain and Squaw Valley and so on :P Intrawest world is all the same fortunately the mountains are not and I live near the best one...Yep I am bragging.

When I landed in YYZ I had to laugh. Several people were getting their luggage including snow boards and skis, while I was moving my BIKE! No snow but lots of clear roads. I might be able to get some standing starts done on the road along with my roller workouts.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and I will be back home for the New Year!

Happy Festivous!

Lego

SICK!!!!!

I am sick. I had a couple of goals in mind and those were to prove that I was a fast enough starter to stay on the team sprint and mainly to turn a fast flying 500m time. The standing 250m time trial was to identify riders for a starting position as the 1st rider. The 500m time was in hopes to earn a position on the team sprint as 3rd rider. Well I accomplished both of those goals. In the 250m TT, I posted a time close to the top riders. I think I was 4th or 5th fastest with only a few tenths of a second off the fastest time. I qualified as the second fasted 500m qualifier next to Cam a current national team rider.

Unfortunately for all the riders at the selection with the exception of one, no one was selected to travel to Australia for the 1st world cup of the season. We were told that these selections would be used to select riders for the L.A. World cup in January...I am now focusing my training on obtaining a spot on that World Cup team.

I have a new coach now and someone whom I think can really move me forward in my training. I am looking forward to this new opportunity.

Thanks you to all my teammates and all my friends that have supported me through my training and that have helped me continue to get better. I hope you will all continue helping me.

On a different note, my buddy Travis Smith has a pretty fun Blog and if you have a chance have a read. Trav has many of the same interest that I have, Bikes, Cars Speed. He has some cool videos and I am looking forward to driving his new car when I get there for the L.A. World Cup!

Here is the link http://travissmithracing.wordpress.com/

Peace and long life!

Lego

Day 1 Hmmm

It seems like a lot of what the CCA has said will once again be different then what they plan on doing. anyways...

Today was the standing 250m trial. This is a means to identify a possible starter for the team sprint. I accomplished what I wanted to do with this effort...show that I would be strong enough to stay on the starter. I am actualy focusing on the 3rd riders position. I have the fitness to maintain the speed and I always like riding 3rd spot.

I am not sure what my times today were but top half of the pack though. I know that my 2nd one could have been faster then it was, I spun my back wheel out and that took away from my time. Whatever, tomorrow is the big day for me. Up until tonight it was 69.9km/h. Training with Cam and Matt doing speed work tonight, the three of us managed to hit in excess of 70km/h...actually I think we were at 73.something km/h. It would appear that at those speeds we are coming close to reaching the speed capacity of the track. In two seperate efforts we cruised to in excess of 70km/h. That is FREAKING FAST! Fun and un-nearving at the same time.

With T-minus 4 days until National team selections...the speed and the power seem to be there. Night Race!

Wahhh Hoooo! Or wait that was Wahhh OUCH! Holy crap my legs were tired tonight. I had a great gym workout with Keith last night, not super intense but very specific. My legs are not overly sore today just tired...that was until a 200lb steel fence fell on me! It smoked me in the calf muscle and *&%$ that really sucked. I think I may be having a hard time walking tomorrow.

All things considered racing went fairly well for me tonight. The team is not really working together during the weekly races. We are all trying to gain fitness not work everyone else over. We are the dominant team on the track so we decided to race for ourselves for training purposes.

The first race was a 40-lap Point A Lap race where the rider who crosses the finish line first each lap receives a point. The rider with the most laps wins. While riding hard and doing many laps at 50km/h-52km/h I managed a 2nd place. Not to bad.

The next race was an Unknown distance race, meaning just that. You don't know how many laps you will be riding. All of a sudden the bell rings and that means the end is on the finish of the next lap. While I feel there are only 2 ways of winning this race. 1. You attack and try to stay away until the bell lap or 2. Sit in the pack and hope that you can win the bunch sprint and another rider does not get away with option 1. Unfortunately I choose the wrong way tonight. I attacked and stayed away for many laps with another rider but alas, we were caught and when the bell rang I was in the wrong position to contest the sprint. I think I was 5th.

Finally the final race was a race called the Burnaby Velodrome Elimination to Scratch race. Every two laps the last rider gets pulled from the race until only half of the field is remaining. At that point basically the first rider to cross the finish line wins the race after the set distance has been obtained. BANGERRANG!!! I won this race.

So in all not a bad night of racing but...It already hurts to walk :P We will see how I feel from the AM workout!

Live long and prosper!

Lego

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://legos-world.blogspot.com/2006/10/wed-night-race.html' title='Wed. Things are going well. My friend Sean Eadie from Australia is helping me a bit with my preparation, which in itself is very exciting since he is a former World Champion.

What I think is better then that though is having a training group finally. After my first year with the National team, I basically had to train by myself...gets really trying sometimes. Now I have Keith living just down the road with me and Cap't Barlee is coming over weekly for Wed. and Thurs. training sessions. It is great having these guys here to push the limit with me. The three of us are so evenly matched we are always pushing each other. In turn we are all getting faster.

As I enter my last two weeks of prep I get to start on my speed phase. No more massive gears, just plain SPEED. Those of you that know me know how much I like SPEED.

I am looking forward to selections with renewed energy after a nice break and some high quality training. I hope to turn a few heads.

Peace out!

Lego

Introducing...

ME!

Welcome to my new Blog.
